The
EBU 5G project group deals with technical and non-technical issues related to
business arrangements, implementation models and regulatory conditions for 5G
mobile systems. 5G technology is currently at an advanced stage of
standardization and pre-commercial trials. The technical performance of 5G
systems will be higher than in earlier generations of mobile systems.
Commercial deployments are expected to start in the near future, but large
scale coverage will last much longer.
It
has been suggested that 5G may have a transforming effect on many industries,
including the audiovisual media sector. This can have a significant impact on
EBU members. In addition to the technical aspects of 5G, EBU members are
increasingly interested in how 5G networks will be implemented and operated, as
well as how specific broadcasters' requirements can be met.
The
main goals of this group are:
Investigate
possible and planned 5G deployment models, including models other than those
traditionally adopted by telecommunications network operators.
Understanding
the distribution of the network and its possible role in enabling new business
arrangements for content production and distribution.
Discover
the potential of private networks and their relationship to network
segmentation in content production and distribution.
Outline
possible future scenarios for existing distribution networks and their possible
relationship with 5G.
Help
in educating EBU members on the potential benefits of 5G, as well as possible
problems.
Cooperation
with other relevant EBU working groups and external stakeholders, in particular
with the industry.
